To Poli and the Rescue Gang: What are your opinions on the 6 Human Souls?
🩵 = Patience.
💙 = Integrity.
💚 = Kindness.
💛 = Justice.
🧡 = Bravery.
💜 = Perseverance.
(Heardtale)
Jin: It's still surprising, especially that these hearts allow us to use magic. But seriously, how does the soul color system work for you?
Annabelle: Honestly, we don't know how it works completely. We just accepted the fact the soul colors mean certain character traits.
Amber: So you don't fully understand this system either?"
Chara: Well, it's just a theory, it's basically people and monsters of the past noticed similar character traits with a certain soul color and also their abilities. Maybe that's why these colors are associated with a certain character trait.
Conrad: The theory sounds plausible to me.
Kim: I agree.
Helly: Yes, the theory is not bad. But still, this system is surprising.
*The other rescuers just nodded in agreement.*

okay but i'm not over about the core themes of severance... this show revolves around a procedure that allows you to severe yourself from aspects of your reality, effectively separating you not just from what has made you yourself but from the people who have shaped you and who inform your life. you lose those connections. the characters are even further severed from other workers on the same floor. at every turn, the corporation (which represents those capitalist ideologies with a very christian, very white, and very american flavor) dissuades them and discourages them from forming proper, genuine bonds with other human beings. it descourages human emotions. it punishes and abuses those who dare to exhibit human behavior.
and then the show takes them and says - "these people's connections is what's going to save them, even when they do not have the full picture." it's also a good exploration of mental illness, depression in particular. even when you cannot remember who you have been, or when you cannot be the person you've been anymore, the people who truly honestly love you, your connection to them, is what's going to save you. mark stout's connection with his sister and brother-in-law literally opened mark s's whole life wide open. she believes him. she wants to help. ricken's honest sentiments inspire them. the macrodata workers' bond with each other - their decision to be a unity, their affection, their effort to fight together - is what sets them on the path to freedom, whatever shape it takes. irving's connection to burt - noble, brave, solemn burt - literally teaches him the importance to stand up for himself and those he loves. it changes his mind and life.
their individual choices matter, of course. their individuality matters. they severed themselves from themselves for various reasons, and this separation doesn't really serve them in the same ways either. but it also provides unexpected perspective. helly is the best example. the eagan outside of work is an asshole, and ruthless, and inhumane. but the helly inside has her same drive and a strong sense of justice. she knows bullshit when she sees it, and she is not afraid to fight the things the other side of her has done. but it is her connection to her fellow coworkers what gives her the means to reach that insight. it was a personal issue first and foremost, but she realized the very scope of helen's actions until she was able to walk outside in her shoes. her egging on everyone to revolt is also a big reason of why they are able to shake things up. her connection to them is paramount to everyone involved.
and i just deeply, deeply appreciate this kind of writing that believes strongly in the power of love despite. despite the horrors of the world, despite the injustice, the pain. there's power in loving people. petey's love for his friend and daughter made him do the impossible, it made him reach out to others, it made him try to break everything in search of the truth, and it helped those he loved step on that path, too. in spite of everything.
i just find it powerful.
